In the Tempo of Time

by Robert E. A. Lee

Where did April go?
I wasn’t ready even when it came,
maybe looking the other way,
maybe lost in the winds and Ides of March.
The world tells me this April is gone forever.
Before escaping, April previewed May --
sunny, blue skies, sprouting green leaves,
blossoms rejoicing at their homecoming.
Where were the April showers?
Are the seasons out of sync,
skewed by thawing arctic ice?
April didn’t even hesitate. No sentimental goodbye --
its moments retreated as unremembered breaths.
Life’s momentum has accelerated through my decades,
yet ticking in tempo with billions of spent heartbeats.
May we mourn the passing days, years,
colllective lives slipping by
into some cosmic memory dust?
On their way I beg first to snatch and archive
random reflections in any of my open brain cells.

April left us to make room for May --
each dawn bringing its promise of new life.
Come into the spring air of delight --
one more renewal, one more chance, one more gift
from the one Gift Giver who alone can open the door
and invite us into tomorrow.

Thank you, dear Lord.
