Peg O' My Heart

by Robert E. A. Lee

Oh, Peg, O dearest Peg, first-born:
You changed my life!
Your mother’s daughter,
child this father fathered.
Oh, Peg, who fed family
delicious smiles, happy voices
with songs of your choices,
always drawing, ever sketching
yesterday’s scenes
tomorrow’s dreams
You lived love, I say,
and you live it now
you live it today!
You loved life, you showed us how.
Vivacious then, still happy now --
each day display
empathy sympathy
concern for the “other”
so like your own, your own dear mother!
You’ve been called to be passionate
in artistic vocation
marriage motherhood
sisterhood daughterhood lovelihood.

Oh, Peg, my dear, another year
but you’re ever young
and thinking clear.
While playing life’s game,
you still lead its team
singing sweet solo
dreaming the dream.

My gift is a prayer
daily for love, faith, hope
God’s resources to help you cope
peace to fill your artist’s soul
grace to live your chosen role
will to reach your heart’s own goal.

A proud father’s birthday love
to his princess of art
to Peg, Oh Peg o’ My Heart!

For Peg on her birthday, September 1, 2005
