Spitting Image

by Robert E. A. Lee

Hi, I’m Bob!
     Hi! I’m Robert.
We’re together.
     In more ways than one.
He bothers me; too critical.
     You ask for it.
Too judgmental.
     Take it or leave it.
Always looking over my shoulder.
I’m here to back you up.
You seem to look inside me…
     You should look inside you.
…knowing what I’m thinking. That’s scary.
     Is that so surprising? Relax.
Often when I see you, I laugh.
     Laughing is healthful.
Sometimes I cry.
     That’s good, too.
We argue. Mostly about what I do, what I say.
Do I start it or do you?
You see me at my worst.
     Sometimes at your best, Bob.
You never call me by name.
But you always call me Robert.
Well, that’s how I see you.
And it’s how I see you, Bob.
We can’t keep meeting like this. It’s unreal.
What could be more real than this?
Is it done with smoke and mirrors?
Not smoke, we gave that up decades ago.
I did. But I never saw you smoke.
Come on! I did what you did, remember?
Okay. No smoke. And no mirrors, right?
     Wrong. It’s all mirrors, Bob.
I, a mirror image of you?
     Not really, old man.
Meaning?
I, alas, am merely the mirror image of you.
Ow! Is there hope for me, for us?
     It’s all up to you.
Yeah. Thanks.
     Any time.
